Air filter/box/AFM(?)/AMS(?) woes.

Having bought this gassed (not by Steve) 1987 Caravelle 2.1 DJ Syncro T3 in 2005 I have been plagued over the years by so-called mechanics from many garages.
My latest mechanic has informed me that whenever he test drives the bus a loud `pop` is heard after a short while from the engine bay and the engine immediately stops. Inspection shows the large hose attached to the box has blown off it.
My mechanic is mystified.
This non-mechanic would appreciate any help and guidance regarding this problem.
