wierd starting phenomonen

When Pete originally fitted my LPG conversion in June i originally had no problems but starting became progressively worse. Pete came back in September and disabled the choke mechanism and it has been fine since then.
But on two separate occasions when i have started on LPG and i have stalled whilst the engine is still cold. The van will not start on LPG at all, it just cranks until the battery runs flat without any sign of it starting.
In these cases i have either been able to bump start or had to start on petrol. The latter not being easy as the van hates starting on petrol as the choke has been disabled.
any thoughts ??

sounds daft, but have you knocked the control switch to the middle position - lots of cranking, no fire?
Did that once....nearly called the AA, then realised I had no lights on the control unit!
switched to gas and away she went (phew)

Is there any smell of excess gas from the exhaust after cranking?
If not perhaps there is an air leak or its set too lean? Gas does take more effort to start and if the settings have screwed up and theres an excess of air then that could be casuing your problems. My gas conversion seems to have 3 places where you can alter the way the engine runs on gas. 2 knobs on the way into the carb and 1 on the vapouriser. The one on the vapouriser appears to only effect idle speed but i'm guessing the ones on the way into the car alter the air/fuel mixture. I've played around a little with mine to get the optimum. It does take a lot of cranking before it starts on gas though.
If you're having problems with starting anyway, hows the basics? Plugs, leads, distributor cap etc etc??
Just a few ideas.

Do you let it "gas" for 4 secs, turn the key back, gas again, then start? Goes first click on this system for me - even when its below freezing it still starts easily. Pete set the system up to allow the initial gas into the engine to flow for 4 secs before swithcing off.
