I seem to have loads of play in my steering.

It also feels very lumpy and unresponsive.
What should I be checking and/or replacing.

From what I know it has never had any new bushes ect.

I've just changed my anti roll bar bushes, drop link bushes and radius rod bushes on the front of mine and the steering feels a million times better! parts didn't cost the earth, but the ones that were on there were a sorry state.
Drove to Devon then this weekend just gone and it was blowing a gale, felt much more stable than it did before.

Standard suspension?
Standard tyres?

Ok, so, what's changed ? What has been touched since the steering wasn't 'lumpy' ? Have you checked the wheel nuts ? Checked for play in the front wheel bearings ?

Its standard steering, lowered and running 18"'s with 225/40/18 tyres.
Wheel bearing do seems to have a little play in them so I will start there.

Check the lower column coupling, the rubber bushes may have collapsed.
You may have a failed rubber "donut" joint. One inside (below the rubber boot at floor level) and two on the relay shaft under the van, that goes to the rack (one each end)
