I was having issues with a crap radio signal when I was in Glencoe last week, I know I shouldn't really expect a signal but needed footie updates, and I don't use the phone when I'm out.

Anyway, I thought I was missing an aerial because the signal was that bad, but when I had a look under the dash I found a steel telescopic aerial had been fitted and was extended on it's side along the inside of the dash.

A. Is this normal or is someone just being lazy with fitting a proper upright aerial?

B Can anyone tell me what the best option is for a good signal when we're out and about?

Any help with this would be brilliant, especially with this weekend in mind.

There are a couple of 'standard' locations. 1 is at the bottom of the front pillar, and the other is half way up the pillar.
A recent post recommended taking a bee sting aerial from a wreck in a scrap yard and mount it central above the windscreen.
The choice is yours!

Also there was an option for the windscreen to have an aerial track embedded in the glass.

I would guess a previous owner put the aerial in but didn't want to cut the bodywork.

That was me. I did it to the twin slider I owned for a while. It worked really well and looked cool



My "main" van has two gutter mounts. One is a CB radio aerial and the other is an amplified radio aerial.



They look like they are leaning back in that pic, but they aren’t. My OCD wouldn't allow that

There used to be only one transmitter for Glencoe which disappeared some years ago as it was on a ski lift that became defunct. No BBC signal there at all!
Nevis radio was the only transmission - on 97 Mhz - I don't know if it still broadcasts there though. I am sure that you could research that!
One of the benefits of being in an area like that is there isn't any radio/phone/etc.reception.

I bought an A-post mounted Hirschmann (original equipment) but I couldn't bring myself to drill the hole! In the end I went for one of these :

It took a week or 2 to arrive but has been very good and is quite discreet running up the edge of the windscreen. As said though, if there's no signal then you're not going to receive anything, no matter how good your aerial is!

I've opted for a cheap Chinese import of ebay... it should be here in about a month.

The radio signals won't be though!

For an extra 99p, I wouldn't put it past them to send some Chinese stations
