0.5mm2 is sufficient but I'd use 1mm2 or even 1.5mm2 just because its stronger.

Some time ago I got around to fitting an OEM tacho in the right hand side of dash clocks and since no cable existed for this on mine, I decided to use some small three-core mains flex - using just one of the three wires. The cable itself was ridiculously cheap in Wilco. I reasoned that the extra two wires (being as the whole cable went from front to back underneath) would be handy if I needed extra connections from dash to rear in the future.
