Here's a pic of a heater heat exchanger from a heater that I sold 3 months ago - the guy ran it from diesel that had been put into old oil containers that had oil remaining in them:
This is what they should look like:
You have been warned!!!

Kerosene burns hotter and cleaner - if I could get it local and cheap I'd use it also.

Wouldn't the 'contaminated' fuel burn hotter because of its oil content? That was what first struck me.

The heat produced is all down to the calorific value of the fuel being burnt. Of course Diesel has a high calorific value, but actually Paraffin (aka Kerosene) has a slightly higher calorific value. Lubricating oil is lower than both of them. This is why, in the world of high performance 2 stroke engines, one tries to use as little 2 stroke oil as possible, as it doesn't contribute much to the power output of the engine.

Isn't Kerosene the same thing as domestic heating oil? I use the 28 second heating oil for my central heating, currently costs 22.5p per litre. You can buy two grades, standard 28 sec oil or a higher quality oil if you have an Aga cooker/ boiler. (The 28 sec is it's viscosity)
Trouble is, you have to buy at least 500 litres a time
