Im working on a bespoke roof box to fit in the westy luggage tray. Early stage CAD models...just to show the idea.
Plan is waterproof, lockable, hinged from the front of the van, lifting handles, lightweight ? In alluminium, painted or grained finish.

I've always thought this space is wasted as you can't put anything much on as it'll get pinched or wet

Definitely not wasted! Don't know what we'd do without it. We use a waterproof grey bag that I bought from eBay and is designed to fit the space. Awning, chairs, body boards, Cadac, buckets and spades etc all go up there. Brilliant stowage space.

My case is locked down and waterproof it stays on the rack permanently it as all my tools in and the jack it even as a spade in which I had to use to dig us out one time. So definitely not a wasted space.

I have a 1720 peli case too. It's very useful. We had 46kgs of spares and tools in it when we went to Morroco.

Weight limit up there is 50kgs.

Your design looks like it will be bigger and less noisy. Do you have any idea how much it will cost?

thanks Tom. im going to get a prototype made once the design is done. then I will try it and offer up photos for discussion. I will try to accommodate all good ideas (that we can manufacture in house). I will then work out a cost.
my plan will be to ensure that it stays in the affordable realms. I will need to cover materials and time....but not looking at marking it up.

as soon as I have more I will let you know. its obviously a fill in job...so gets worked on as and when.

Don't forget to factor in restraining it in the roof recess but also restraining the stuff inside it: cargo loops or similar.

Looks good though, would be nice to have a lockable box up there.

I was going to leave that to the owner to fit a lock somewhere in the tie down area.....a bike lock type thing through the carry handles ??

If you could add some welded on tangs to the rear edge of the body of the box, could they then be slotted into the luggage strap cleats from below as you insert the box into the carrier. This would provide a secured rear edge and then maybe something similar on the front so once the box is inserted under the rear cleats, the front cleats are used similarly but with bolt on tangs which are secured inside the front edge of the box via coachbolts and nylocks or similar? Much more secure especially as the box could potentially be holding upto 50kgs (including its own weight). Also less nickable...

Weatherproof strip along the edge to keep the wet out or drain holes?

Just some ideas. Looks good though and if you need someone to trial a prototype..... :ok
