Tight Hub !

Just fitted one of my replacement brake discs on my 1989 1.9 petrol t25 and prior to replacing the wheel I have found out that the thing is very stiff to rotate.... Have I tightened the bearings on too tight or should I just carry on and take her for a decent drive to wear the caliper carrier down a bit ?

Can we assume you cleaned the debris behind the caliper piston seals?
With the pads backed off is it still stiff?
Bearing tightness is described in the Haynes.
Finger tight then peened

Do NOT drive it!

I think I've put it on too tight, finger tight isn't done with a great big adjustable ¡

Thanks

Thanks
Let's hope you haven't damaged the race.
An annoying drone will let you know :D

I thought the annoying drone had left the forum!

The problems over correct taper roller bearing adjustment have always been an issue on this forum. I think a good percentage of premature failures aren't actually down to cheap bearings but inexperienced repairers fitting them.
All I can say to the OP is; something like this has got to be right and are you sure everything else is OK i.e.....bearing races drifted in all the way? bearings correctly greased and voids not over packed? carrier & wheel bolt torqued up correctly? single pot pistons free? pad to carriers completely free with anti seize paste applied? brake fluid changed? sliding pins lubricated & free? and stub axle nut correctly adjusted and peened?
Not wishing to put anyone off DIY but brakes are mission critical so at least follow the Haynes.

Thanks for the advice, as you say brake's are mission critical and should be done by the book ! But I'm a bloke !!
I read the manual once and then attacked it with a big adjustable :idea

Its the brake caliper mounting bracket that is touching ever so slightly.

I'll wait till I've finished the job with replacing the drivers side pipes and see how she drives!

Even more worrying.... because if the carrier? is catching the disk (later floating calliper) then this may indicate the the disc isn't located where it should be....which would then (given the work carried out) lead me to suspect that one of the bearing races might not have been drifted 'fully home'.

Martin, The caliper mount is fouling the back of the disc, I'm positive that the bearing sleeve is all the way in. Initially I thought I had left something out like a washer or something but the manual photo was as I assembled it.

Thanks for the idea's, unfortunately work next week spoils my time with maisie .

I hope you sort this one out mate as something definitely isn't right, It isn't just catching the splash shield is it?
I suppose it could also be the over tightening? were the new bearings the same size as the old ones? there are different types...personally I wouldn't drive it until I was satisfied everything was OK.

Re front wheel bearing,

And

Am I reading this correctly, you’re going to ignore the hugely overtightened wheel bearing and the brake calliper being way out of line, you're going to replace the drivers side pipes and then just "see how she drives". I do hope I am misunderstanding what you're saying.

:D No, I'm going to take the nearside wheel off again and check the tightness of the "Thrust Washer"... I may have been a bit too energetic when trying to make sure that was on properly............. Promise I won't drive it until it's free moving... :cheese
