hi long time member. but i dont post often as i am just learning...
i am looking for advice on a problem with my van it is a 1.6 water cooled petrol 1985
driving along the road i stopped at a junction, when i went to go again the van stalled. then i really struggled to get it into first gear. after a fight with gear lever i managed to crunch it into 1st then kind of forced second gear, all the way home the traffic lights were against me, so i had to fight to get it into a gear just to get it home. thankfully i managed to get it back to my drive way.
i am a novice when it comes to mechanical issues and i have only owned the van for 8 months.
any advice on what would be the problem and how much this kind of thing would cost to remedy would be greatly appreciated
my first thought would be the clutch is gubbed

Could be failed clutch slave/master cylinder or a leak in the line. Is the hydraulic fluid level ok?

Was too dark to tell when i finally got home. Will need to have look tomorrow. i could get it onto 3rd easily enough. And reverse was crunched in....

had a look. i take it the level is the container behind the dashboard. if it was it is just below the max

looking at the wiki , i take it , it could just as easily be gear box problem. it is not been slipping out of gear , or has been a gradual thing it seems all of a sudden

Turn the van off, put her in gear, foot on clutch and start her up. See what happens my guess is the slave cylinder not an expensive job to get fixed and even cheaper to fix your self

Cool just tried that. Clutch in put into first gear. Pretty easily didn't have to force it at all. Started fine. But as soon as I took foot of acelerator it stalls.. Not sure if that's just because its cold out and engine is cold as It sometimes stalls when it running cold thanks for replies so far appreciate it

My guess is the slave cylinder.

Ok thanks I will start researching tomorrow. Is there anything obvious I should look for to tell that its knackered . Cheers Dave

Nothing obvious the seals wear out inside.
New ones are cheap but fiddly to fit.
It could also be the thrust bearing giving up.

morning. i have been under the van this morning having a look. . i noticed fluid dripping down beside the fuel tank. when i depressed the clutch in van i could hear a hiss. on closer inspection i think it is coming from thin pipe that runs from front to rear of the van it looks corroded and i can see dripping from it. .also the tank behind dashboard has dropped
i take it i will need to replace full pipe. not sure of name of it. i have been looking through haynes manual trying to get info on it

spent most of day looking under van and engine bay, looks to me that i will maybe need to replace slave cylinder also as it is very corroded . seen a few on ebay for 25 pound mark.. i imagine they would be fine.. ?
also i will replace the hose coming out of cylinder
i found the union fitting on jk
. however the leak i have is in the main hose that runs most of the length of van and i cant seem to find a replacement for this can anyone point me in right direction. am i just typing in wrong thing or are these hard to come by .

The slave cylinder still works. The only reason I was thinking about replacing was because of the amount of rust on it. Looks like its the original. If I can turn the bleed nut and it works I will just leave it and buy the repair. Thanks for link .

They're always rusty, unless you paint them prior to fitting. I make it a rule to paint most cast/steel parts I fit now, even if they 'appear' to be painted. The paint on my rear drums appears to be holding up.

I changed my slave cylinder but it was seeping fluid.
