The passenger door has been filling with water whenever we get heavy rain, and I've noticed it seems to sit in the door until opened and the pour out of the lowest point on the bottom edge.

It looks like it's supposed to drain from this point and so could be an air lock or blockage in the door preventing it from draining when the door is shut. It got so bad recently it must have overflowed into the compartment behind the passenger seat.

Any ideas?

Are you saying the door filled up with water to the level of the arch? Surely not, I MUST be misunderstanding this somewhere. My window scrapers are cracked all along which would mean my doors probably let water in too. Another job to get onto!

Nevertheless odd. The interior of the doors is a "wet" area but shouldn't fil up.

Are the drain holes clear and can the water get to them, I mean is there anything inside the door that shouldn't be? What condition are the scrapers in?

Yep, and it really is surprising when the door is opened and water pours out, easily a few pints when it's been stood and had a few days rain.

Agree the wheel arch is unlikely, but can't think where else it's coming from to be in the door itself, and coming through into the passenger seat carpet/rear compartment.

Either way, I'm keen to know how to get the water not to sit inside the door panel until it's opened and then can isolate at least that problem.

If i understand this correctly then my guess is that the water is passing the door sealing foil behind the door card, perhaps due to a door fitted speaker. It would run down and sit in the footwell and the door's rubber seal is holding the water until the door gets opened.

The water isn't in the footwell, but collects in the actual door panel. When I open the door, there's a pause and then water flows from the gap in the lower door section onto the road.

I've suspected the seal for the quarter light is letting water in but not sure, if it did, would the water collect like this or should it drain?

I'd be tempted to remove the door card and leave off ,with thus weather you won't have long to wait lol, what state is the membrane in ? If asbad as you sat then how the water gets in us not the issue but the amount sitting there is. I would close door ,open window and fill the door with a hose or w can and observe , sounds drastic but its only what's happening as we speak then come back here ,oh and picks would be good

Door card off and rummage around in the recesses - there's got to be something that's blocking the flow from inside that shifts with some sideway force - flap of plastic or something? There's no way the door is air tight..!

Clear your drainage holes - did mine last month and it was like mud in the bottom with dust that had got wet. A good clean out then blasted through everywhere with compressed air and the water drains straight through again as god (VW) intended.

As Oldie says ^^^ except in my case the blockage was the Waxoil that I sprayed into the door during the summer. Blocked the drain holes then hardened giving a lovely sloshy noise everytime the door was opened. A quick poke (oo-er missus!) and the problem was solved.
