Hi everyone

Close to fitting my Subaru ej20 into my t25 but just wondered is it easier to mate the gearbox to the engine first or fit gearbox and then engine? What would you recommend? My thinking is if I can slide the box and engine underneath into the engine bay it shouldnt be too difficult with an engine crane to bolt it all back in....or is there a problem with this method? Not sure how different it would be with a Subaru lump but that's the way I put my 2.0cu back in. Mated the gearbox and engine back together out of the van then rolled it under on a trolley, got the gearbox mount bolted loosely and then got the engine up into place and all bolted in. I was working on the floor though and didn't fancy lying under the van trying to mate the box up to the engine!

I found easy with engine hoist to fit engine & gearbox as one unit. Managed on my own.

I had to replace the gearbox recently and it was much harder to just mate the box under the van & was forced to enlist the wife!

We have a method that seems to work. If you have access to a lift/ramp, this is how we do it.
We put the engine and gearbox together on a big table with wheels. Put the van up on the ramp and wheel both engine and gearbox under the van into position. With one above, and one on the up-down switch, we lower the van onto the table. Should add, we have a two post lift because of using this method all the time. Works a treat. Previously we rolled the whole lump under the van on a moving trolley and lifted it into position with an engine crane. Works well, but back breaking work (if you are a mid lifer!).

Whatever you do, be very careful of your back!!!!!

i use a pallet truck



build it all up on the patio then wheel it straight outside and under the van, pump it up and job done
