exhaust

got a 87 1.9 waterboxer can anyone tell me if the exhaust has a heat shield on it and or ducting to stop fumes getting into van

It does have a heat shield but it's not this that prevents fumes entering the van. Here ought to be an engine hatch which does that.

should be a heat shield above silencer which helps stop exhaust getting sucked back into engine bay but it would only get into the vehicle if the engine hatch or tail gate seals are gone.
Also look for rusty or puched hole with grommets missing.

shield looks like this, the coolant pressure tank sits on it so it would be strange if it's missing.
