Planning to take my engine and gearbox out tomorrow - 1.6d na
What other work should I consider doing at the same time while the engine is out?

I'm already planning the following -
Fit new core plugs to replace rusted ones
New exhaust.
Clean up the exhaust manifold and get the old rusted studs out and fit new ones.
Check the condition of the clutch.
New engine mounts.
New gearbox mount.
Fit new radiator (old one leaking)

To be blunt, having had a 1.6d n/a, fit a bigger engine. The 1y 1.9d works nicely.

If I have an engine out I change the glow plugs - it's a lot easier on a stand than bent over in the engine bay.

Clean, engine bay, treat rust with vactan or similar and paint, I cut back the soundproofing above gearbox around the box members about an inch to treat the joins, really hard to access any of that with engine in.

if gearbox is corroding badly, clean it up and paint it
pay particular attention to end with mount, remove mount, clean paint, the 5 speed rot through there.

new CV bolts too while half are out, must be torqued back.
