Which Gearbox do I have?

Hi Guys,

I bought my T25 1983 Autosleeper with a VW 1.8 DX engine already installed and just wanted to check what gear box it has. I do not have access to look at the gearbox itself so thought I would see if anyone might know from details.

The registration certificate says engine size 1915cc pertrol so I assume that means it was a DG engine? The current gearbox has 4 gears and with my Golf Mk1 Gti 1.8 DX engine seems fine, although I do not have much to compare it too.

Is it most likely the conversion made use of the original gearbox that went with the 1915cc DG engine? If so what would the code be and is this known to be suited to my current one? Would if be of use if I went with a AGG 2.0 engine, a Tdi or Subaru etc or would it need changing then?

Cheers

PS does this pic of the van details she'd any light?

DW is the long legged 4.86 final drive 5 speed should be fine with any petrol engine; tdi don't go there

Anything could have been swapped when the engine was changed. Definitely a 4-speed? They are a good bit shorter than the 5-speed*, a quick look under the bus should identify it even if the code stamping has gone.

*5-speed has a longer "nose cone" at the front end.

My DW was spot on with the Scooby 2.2

Unfortunately I live abroad and my van is back in the UK. I could have sworn it was 4 speed (95% certain), but I have not driven it in about 3 years so could be wrong.

I will see if I can dig some photos out.

Cheers
