Gear Selection

I'm sure you've heard it all before, but being a newbie I can ask again:
I am having serious problems going into 1st and 2nd (4th grinds a little bit as well) . I've renewed the front selector assembly below the gear lever but that hasn't helped.
I have a 1989 t25 4speed Petrol job.
Any advice would be grateful, even offers of physical assistance would be well paid.

Add it to your profile and a local owner may see it and be able to pop round and help out

I have some gear selection issues too. Mainly 1st to second when cold, but also the gears feel sloppy and worn.
I was advised to change gearbox oil to solve selection issues - although I know there are other issues with bushes and housing etc too.
I put it in the local VW garage last week, and should be able to pick it up Saturday morning when I get back from being away all week.
If needed, I can post some pics of the work completed, and let you know how much of an improvement there is ( I'm hoping a lot..!! ) after I pick it up?
Let me know how you get on. I'm having the oil changed anyway though, as unsure how old the existing is.

It's probably not the gearbox that feels "sloppy"
It's more likely the box below the gearstick.
After thirty years without any grease it's usually a bit worn.
If you look in the wiki there's an overhaul post.
Nice job for a weekend.

Kev, I've already changed all the link stuff below the gear lever. The back end that goes into the gear box is a bit ripped and tatty so I'll have a look for more bits to replace .

Afternoon Al / Anne.
Called garage, and apparently they were sent LHD gearstick..!!
GRRRRRR
This means I can't pick it up today, but I am hoping this doesn't mean I'm off the road for a considerable period.!
The rest is done though - linkage bushes, 5sp housing underneath and gearbox oil etc, but until the RHD gearstick turns up, I won't be driving it.
I will update you when it's done though.

Thanks for the update:
I did my oil change: engine and gearbox.... The amount of crud that was attached to the plug was worrying, gears are a lot better though, but still need to tinker.

Not forgotten about this thread mate.
I am just at the mercy of a supplier for the 5sp housing now - Was supposed to be sent before, but turned out that was 4sp variant too, along with the gearstick they sent - hence Boyd is sat in a yard feeling rather sorry for himself..!!
Did you manage to resolve your issues?
The day I get mine I will provide some feedback on improvements.
I hope I am not being too optimistic, but I will give an honest opinion on whether the work and costs were `worth it`

Smiffo,
Sadly, not had a chance to go out in "her"!
Did you see my post ref "To pay or Not to pay"
I wander what the general consensus will be with that!
