I can't tell you exactly which varient it is, but it is an engine out of an 80's VW Passat or Scirocco. As it has a carb it is very likely an "EX" engine. 1800cc, about 90bhp, long lasting, good motor, BUT it won't fit easily into a T3 / T25 because of the height of the manifold and carb. The injected version of that engine (DX code) however is a common swap over from the 1.6 Diesel powered vans, as it is a very easy swap on them, because the mounts, hoses and exhaust etc are interchangeable (being the same basic block and head design, just one version is Diesel and one is Petrol).
The engine number (and therefore code) should be on the engine block face, just underneath where the thermostat housing bolts to, and just above the gearbox.
Hope that helps.
