Hello there,

I have a 1989 VW T25 1.9 Leisure drive camper that needs some new rear side panels put in. We are saving for a wdding so cant afford garage costs but i would love to learn how to do it myself eventually.

I live in north London. is there anyone around London with the tools and spare time over some weekends to help me? i can pay in cash & beer?

Cheers

Ollie

One step away from the "fund my van restoration" chancer.
My advice: dont get married! Its a titanic waste of cash that could be better spent on other things.

I remember that guy! He wanted a free restoration, had the cheek to call it 'crowd-funding' and then implied everyone here lacked compassion for their fellow man when he failed to sign up a willing list of charitable workers. Hard to imagine why he thought his strategy would work considering he offered nothing in return and it was his very first post... I think his life will be full of bitter disappointments.

Nothing to add regarding the request free welding other than if anybody agrees to do it, could they also pop by mine to do a top-end rebuild for me? I'm saving up for a cruise, you see. Can pay in crisps. Cheers.

It depends what you want. If you something to just get you through an MOT, or to keep you on the road, then there are a few places with okay rates that will do an okay job. There's also a whole host of (VW specific) places that would willingly part you from your money for substandard work at scene tax rates - search the forum for past posts on this matter.

If you want a restoration quality job, then you'll have a problem finding a garage in London that would get a recommendation, and your best bet is probably to save up and take your van to one of the known specialists elsewhere in the UK.

TBH I think it unlikely that you'll find someone willing to help you out at 'mates rates' for something as involved as bodywork!

Good luck.

Might be better to get it done when weather is more favourable. No one likes doing body work this time of year, even for beers. Patch it for MOT then ask again when its sunny - that'd be my tip.

Wouldn't mind someone doing the rear panels on mine, not that I have anywhere I could actually plug a welder in!! Just take an evening class in welding and DIY, is a big job.

If budget is tight as you say, buy a second hand mig welder, practice on scrap steel and go for it. You'll find plenty to weld.
