Oil dipstick tube - hens teeth?

Hi all. New to here and watercooled (but not Aircooled). Just got a 1990 1.9 petrol transporter. Among some other little glitches (see other posts!), the dipstick tube is missing and someone has made a makeshift rubber tubing which is being held up with cable ties against the housing. Wasn't particularly worried about that at first but having read a few articles it seems that this may cause problems. The previous owner (whom I trust) didn't indicate any problems but I want to get all these little things sorted out to make sure we're running as sweet as we can. Any thoughts?

Hi and welcome.
So the guy that sold the van to you didn't mention the dodgy dipstick tube or the non-functioning speedo. On that basis there may be other things you have not been told about too. My advice is take your van to a trusted garage and get the van checked out, before you discover more critical issues. It could save you a money in the long term!

Thanks guys. I did know about the 'small' problems and brought with full knowledge but until I started reading up a bit more about the little things, didn't realise that they might cause problems! It ticks all our other boxes (which were many!) and we still love it so I'm still not massively worried - just want to get it sorted. But will be getting a full check up before we go long haul. Will check with Brickwerks for the part. Cheers

I've just provisionally sold one of these & will let you know if the buyer decides he doesn't want it. Brickwerks have sold out but will be worth sending them an email as it's possible they may not have updated the stock list yet.

You are always going to get things that need to be done to these vans no matter how they look or what you pay for them, it's all about being preventative. If the replaceable items are cheap then that's a bonus :ok

Thanks mate, I have been helped out a lot by complete strangers , the only thing we have in common is a an obsession with aged VW vans ! so happy to help out a fellow in need .

I was recently loaned a complete exhaust system for my Subaru conversion so that I could drive it to the Long life centre to have one fabricated .this community still makes me smile :D
