Breather tank diesel

One of my breather tanks has just fallen off and I can't see how to reconnect it in the dark, how vital is it as it looks like it has never had anything in it? Thanks.

No it won't have had any thing in it...it's a tank for air.
It helps level the fuel in your U shaped tank

Thanks I looked on Wiki and it explains changing the pipes but it didn't say what they are for.

As the tank is a U-shape there would be 2 voids at the top on each side that couldn't be filled without breathers.
Just had one of mine off - there is a single bolt that goes through the top of the wheel arch and the tank is bolted to that with its other end set into a recess at the back of the seat box.
Either your bolt has rusted through or worse, the bolt has dropped through a rusty hole. Or maybe the lug on the tank has broken off.

Looks like it has a jagged bit of rusty metal bolted to it

I just read someone used a Y piece and some tube to get the same effect, I wonder if that would do?

I don't know why the set up is so convoluted - surely it would work the same with just the 2 vents being linked into the filler pipe. Another piece of over-engineering?
That piece of rusty jagged metal may well be the top of the wheel arch - it will be an MoT fail as it is right next to the seat belt anchorage. (Mine just failed on this area)

I had a plate welded in on that side for the seat belt mount so I think this might be part of the old arch.

They deal with roll over/extreme angles- the valve at the top closes if inverted and if you were at an extreme angle the overflow tank would start to fill before fuel leaked from the breather
