Did you undo the splined join in the middle of the long selector bar, Joker, that runs from under the gearstick to the arm on the gearbox? this can be fiddly to adjust correctly again if its disturbed unless you mark it before undoing the pinch bolt.
it can be lengthened and shortened, but also twisted either way to adjust gear selection probs, mine took a bit of time to get right cos i undid it without marking it  haynes manual describes adjusting em pretty well. cheers, wasserleaker.

I took it all off but did mark it..
I seems that it only needs to be a fraction out.
Just getting worried incase somebody said 2nd and reverse problems are a sign of a 5 speed on its way out...
Thanks for the info....

I also changed the 2 alloy shift guides in the box below the gearstick under the floor in mine, as one of the old ones was worn to half the size of a good one, this made a massive difference to the previously vague 'is it in a gear or not' feel that it had before, really tightened up the sloppy gearchange and made it positive. greasing all the sliding bushes on the long link bar helps too, as it tends to get overlooked and they dry up.

--you cant really adjust linkage by trial & error--if you look in Haynes manual its described in there--
