hi all, got a 2l cu Aircooled.
Went away this weekend and have had issues... we got caught in traffic, after a while as i pulled away the van jumped forward made a weird "eerrrnn" noise. it felt as though the after i released the clutch the rear wheel spun and then gripped causing a lunge forward, it happened more and more the hotter the engine got and started to smell like burnt clutch... today we come home and it was fine most of journey only doing the lunge once, any ideas as to what too look for??

Does sound like a worn clutch or release bearing.

Are clutches likely to show wear more so when hot... It was midway home it happened but I carried on and it didn't do it again

A worn clutch friction plate will slip, hot or cold the only noise you'll hear is the engine note rising as you try to accelerate...and the smell of fish as the plate lining heats up
I agree with Ralph, release bearing.

When it was at its worst I was in heavy traffic using it loads. Today was mid journey in normal urban traffic. How much pain am I looking at to sort?

Once driving van is as normal as they ever get. It's revving high at the moment but I dint think that's related.

6hrs tops with lots of tea breaks... nice weekend job
might as well change the clutch and crank seal while you're in there..won't take much longer

My release bearing fell to pieces last week and took the pressure plate with it. My friendly local garage charged me £250 all in. I thought this was pretty good considering the clutch kit is about £100 anyway, and I'd saved 60 quid in fuel getting the AA to take me the 200 miles home

Gearbox out job. Not so much difficult as awkward - particularly when trying to get it back in.

Can box be removed without taking engine out? Or does it all come out?

As we've just said, you remove gearbox. Engine stays where it is.

Is there a how to guide? Had a look a wiki on my phone so may have missed it
