JX 1.6 Turbo Diesel reluctant start when hot ?

Hi, everyone..just wondered if anyone has had any experince with a slow-to-start-when-hot 1.6 JX Turbo Diesel in their van?
The symptoms on mine are that, when hot, (i.e. after a longer run), it is reluctant to start when turned off and left for 10 mins (like when stopping at a rest stop and rerturning to the van to continue the journey)..it will crank over and over and over, sometimes 10-20 seconds, until it finally starts up..it feels almost as if there is no more fuel in the injection pump, or similar, though there are signs of smoke out of the exhaust as it cranks (possibly unburnt diesel?)...do these have a leak-back check-valve somewhere, to prevent diesel draining from the pump/injectors?
When it is cold, and after the normal yellow light pre-heat (yellow light goes out after about 8 seconds), it is absolutely on the button, starting up instantly.. :?:
Would be grateful for any advice.
Thanks.

I seem to remember it was a temp sensor on my old oil burner when i had this problem.

Ah, Ok thanks for that..do you mean that it would affect the pre-heat relay etc when hot? was it the head temp sensor you mean?

Not sure mate.It was years ago,and it was a local fella(long retired) who sorted it for me.

Could be valve clearance, less when hot, often overlooked when serviced as it starts ok when cold

Had this on my first engine, was the temp sender as it did something to help starting when the temp was above a certain point, until was fixed it took ages to start and gave a plume of smoke from the unused diesel when hot.

A lot of these diseasals, 1.6 and 1.9 s seem to need a touch of glow plugs even when hot. Both my old 1.6 and present 1.9 need it, in fact I have made mine operate the glow plugs every start by over-riding the variable resistance of the temp. sensor. As above most probably the glow plug temp sensor needs replacing.
Have you tried it with the cold start pulled out when it does this? - it may help.

I fitted a non return valve between the filter and pump and it has been fine for years now.

If it were air /fuel draining back it would be hard to to start when cold also having been left longer.

Do you notice it cranking slower when hot?

Another possibility can be the starter is on the way out. This is sometimes more evident in a hot engine when expansion and friction are different to cold. Also check the battery as can also be a problem and a simple check.
