Golf conversion things to know

Hi

My engine's (86 1.9 petrol) conked it and seems (considering my depleting bank supplies) I have a choice of an Elite Engine (the more I read the more I worry?) or entering the intimidating world of alternative engines.

I have spent an hour or two going through long threads about conversions and am considering a Golf (1995-1996). I spoke to a garage who are happy to fit it.
I wanted to ask what are they key things I need to look out for when looking to buy the Golf? Other than it not having a knackered engine! From the forums it seems I need to make sure it has a particular engine code, is that right? Is there anything else that's essential not to miss?

I have been trawling through these threads - but if I've missed an existing thread which asks this question then I am very sorry, if you could link me to it, that'd be great.

Cheers.

Mk3 is slightly more involved wiring wise than a mk2 but fits in easier due to MAF and size of inlet manifold. Also mk3 Gti is so much cheaper to buy.
Buy a complete car as MOT failure/crash damage so you can hear it running and have all the bits you need. Start buying individual parts off ebay and it starts getting pricey.
Hope this helps chap.
