Stalling when warm, rev it high, pop pop bang.

On the verge of stripping the carb again for a clean, wondered if anyone else has other suggestion,

Last month we spent 3 weeks in Cornwall, done quite a few miles, on just one occasion the van spluttered to a halt and all though would start it refused to tick over, after a bit of fiddling and checking a few things without success I resorted to giving the engine a good revving, pop pop bang and it cleared itself and has been fine since.

Today for some reason the same thing, only this time I gave it a good revving without the fiddling, pop pop bang and drove home fine.

Off to France soon so would like it tip top as I can imagine it doing it as we are leaving the Ferry or passing through customs.

I have had similar before and it ended up being muck in the float chamber so this is my first port of call.

Check for air leaks before taking carb apart as these can cause lean running and backfiring too. Don't forget vacuum pipes and the house to the brake servo. Good luck!

The revving thing to clear the problem indicates summat mechanical to me. After checking all the vac pies as mentioned above, check the advance retard plate in the dissy is moving when you suck on the little vac pipe on the vac unit on the dissy. Thinks, can one also check the advance retard bob weight & spring operation without stripping the dissy down, I can't remember

Next I would be looking at the colour and general condition of the spark plugs. That can tell you quite a lot.

Oh, and if you are going to split the carb, I would get a new gasket. If you don't, Murphy’s law dictates the old one will get damaged on removal, then your stuck.

After a carb clean out, new gaskets and an emmision check the van has ran as well as usual without any problems and clocking up a good 1000 miles in the past 10 days. So either this was the problem or its purely coincidental.
