Not sure if I have early or late front bearings...
I have a November 1983 chassis number - this leads me to believe that I should have late bearings as they changed in mid September 1983.
Is there any other way to be sure by measuring the old bearings? The internal diameter of the outer bearing is 21.96mm.
The brake discs were changed by a previous owner so just want to make sure I get the right parts...

Brickwerks have a handy tool, although I think this will just confirm what you already know from the chassis number.

Thanks, yeah that is handy! looks like they're late bearings.

Early fixed caliper (a piston behind each brake pad) or Late (floating caliper) single piston where the other pad is pulled on to the disc by counter forces and the sliding action of the caliper.
The bearings are directly effected by which brake type you have...early bearings (fixed brake caliper) late bearings (floating single piston caliper) So...a quick look or better still, a picture of the brakes will easily reveal what you have.

My 1985 has one of each one side has late bearings the other early but I have early brake pads, I have had it 15 years and had all the service history when I bought it and no mention of one being replaced.

I find that ... very unlikely.

One of the bearings is the same anyway, but as the bearing races are knocked directly into the disc and not a hub (on 2WD's) then the disc type (early or late brakes) determines the bearings.

I'm happy to be proven wrong though....please post pics or some evidence.

Apparently according to Brickwerks they find it often on change over years, but of course I could be lying.

And why would you be lying? strange thing to say!

Like I say..I'm intrigued because there is some discrepancy between the wheel bearing changeover (sept 83) and the early/late brake changeover point which appears to be in 86. So I admit that on the face of it some later discs would have been machined differently to accept an early bearing contrary to my understanding.
I am now wondering whether the stub axles themselves are also different on 2WD models (non power steering)
