bearings

Hello all,

I have just bought my first ever VW van - T25 1984 caravelle :-)
The front bearing is dry and has gone and I am happy to do them myself (as they are not pressed in).
I am looking for literature / any owners and workshop manuals - firstly for torque settings!
Any other pearls of T25 wisdom with wheels, brakes, bearings, tyres etc very much welcome!

The Haynes manual has some good clear instructions. I have found it useful for torque settings etc.

The front discs have bearings pressed into the rear.I would be replacing them if i were you.I recommend buying them from Brickwerks,as there are some dodgy ones out there.

Also throw the main hub nut away and replace with new. VW recommends this as does Mr Bently.

Hi Rib, Just to clarify - The front wheel bearings are easy to change and the rear wheel bearings are pressed in - correct? (and thanks)

might as well change the discs, and fit the new bearings.... cheap enough these days :ok

Just something you said......the front bearings on a T25 are 'Taper Roller' type i.e. two bearings, inner and outer, each opposed to the other. This type of bearing arrangement must not be 'torqued up' rather, the clearance adjusted until just a small amount of play is left.
Torquing the stub axle nut up! would lead to very early bearing failure as I suspect has happened on here many times although I doubt anyone would admit to it! lol.

I've recently changed all bearings myself front and back. Used cheap atec bearings for the front and they fit fine. For rears don't buy cheap ones....They'll end up in the bin trust me. Buy proper FAG/INA ones from Brickwerks. Fitted all mine without a press.

No idea but they're easy enough to change... cheap rear ones were a shockingly bad fit, so tight that it crushed itself when pressed in.

Interference fit, so requires drifting in with a punch...surprisingly difficult to damage the bearing races, I know that's a weird sort of thing to say but they are not easy to mark unless you are absolutely useless and using a badly mushroomed punch. The races take just a minute or so (inner/outer) for each. 'Starting' them off (getting the race to start moving into the recess) in the most difficult part.

You can use the old outer races to hammer on - cut a slit on one side of it with a thin blade on the grinder so that it will spring inwards a bit and be easy to remove from the hole when you're putting the new one in.
