I have been working on my van for around a week and it has been started almost every day but not run for long but today the right hand side sounds like a tank, I understand that the followers are hydraulic, do you think a run may cure this fault or could I cause any damage, mileage on the van is just over 100k, hasn't made this noise before.
On the plus side fitted the clutch master cylinder and clutch seem to be fixed.

Yes needs a thrash, don't run the engine unless you get if up to full temperature or tappets will clatter
also know as an italian tuneup

They like running and HATE and I mean
HATE being parked up .... it's what makes them a living thing, unlike a soul-less plumber's van

I found regular oil changes help this lots as after time the oil thins and drains out of the tappets,

if mine is a living thing I would say a stroppy teenager, for the past week every time I fix one small fault I find another or something else plays up for no apparent reason, the wife wanted a van and at this rate it will be named on the divorce papers

You are merely going through what many, if not most of us did ... catching up on a former owner's neglect and bodges. It takes time and money but soon all will become clear.

Quite right, after a while the tappets ell you when to change the oil ... you just have to listen to them
