I had a little issue with crap in the petrol tank which now appears cleared. The hoses are also cleared.
The fuel pump is putting out a very healthy flow of petrol. Can it be too much?

When I switch to petrol the carb physically floods, there is petrol sloshing about at the top of the carb. Lots of smoke and smell of petrol. And then it drowns. My initial thought was that the float valve was sticking so went to take it apart but some joker has glued it together. Given the cost of a gasket set, I bought a second hand carb which I am told was running fine. Switched them over and the symptoms are the same. It could be that in the post the float valve as been knocked or something similar. But before I strip the second carb, is there any other cause?

Is the fuel return hose clear?
Also seem to recall that the return hose has a one-way valve in it - might be worth checking that too?

Oh good idea. But just blown through the return pipe and it is clear all the way to the tank.

Is this a mechanical or electric pump? Electric pump pressure can be too high for carb to handle, may need a pressure regulator.

Think youre right about looking at the float chamber then.

yep needle valve in float chamber most likely shot, or float has a hole but less likely

second hand carb could just be a stuck float hinge pin if it's been sitting dry on a shelf for years

needle valve in early carbs is slightly different to the late carbs, check your carb suffix as most rebuild kits are for the later version

Needle valve usually has to be replaced if you go from mech to electric pump or indeed from duff mech pump to new mech pump. The extra pressure being too much for the valve which by now has a ring worn into the cone and will no longer seal properly.
