Butane is a summer gas and propane is a winter gas,
I personally use butane, but to be fair I only use the van in the summer

I have the same problem with my Carthago Camper. The regular Propane/Butane Calor Gas bottles are too wide by about 1cm each side. Even the smaller calor tanks are still too wide (same width as the 6kg tanks, just shorter).
I've resorted to buying 2 Camping Gaz canisters & replacing one as it runs out, so I've always got at least one full gas tank.
Currently saving up for an underfloor LPG Tank to run Fridge, Cooker & Gas heater on. Gasure stock them for a couple of hundred, but once fitted it'll be peanuts to fill & we could bugger off for weeks without having to worry about changing gas tanks. Plus I gain an extra cupboard! (well worth 200 quid...)

The largest Camping Gaz bottles you can get are actually quite small (the 901 size). They will definitely fit your cupboard.
I bought 2 plus the regulator. When one runs out, I replace with the full one & then tootle off & replace the empty one.
