Engine battery cover? which type?

HI all,
The garage were shocked to see that I had a bare metal lid over my engine battery under the front seat. They said that it could really easily have caught fire, which completely freaked me out.
What do I need to cover it with? Some sort of rubber?
Thanks all

Yes a bit of an old rubber mat or similar. If you're really fancy you can cut it to shape and glue it to the lid, so it's over the +ve terminal.

I glued a thick piece of cloth to mine. They came from the factory bare metal though. The original battery might of been not as tall.

The positive terminal should have a plastic cover over it.

Ahhh!
So, i took the old battery out (which I think did have battery covers on) and bought a new battery from GSF who were pretty awful in advising me as to which one I should have... they said Id just have to 'take a chance'...really unhelpful. Anyway, so the new one was taller and didnt have any covers on it..

The battery's size decides which one you have. your batt compartment is 310 wide x 175 deep (front to back) x 185 high
As for manufacturer, I find sticking with branded batteries is best.
Varta, elecsol, bosch, exide, lucas etc

As well as a terminal cover on the positive, I'm going to affix a couple of these to the metal cover as well for extra safety. OK they're for the cat flap but fit the battery covers ok:

Ooh they look good.
So that whole piece of foam only costs a couple of pounds and fits the ENTIRE underside of the engine cover? Or am i confused!?

You're confused! It fits the flap that the number plate is on.

As marlinowner says they are actually made for the cat flap but also fits the battery cover pretty well too as the pic below shows:
There's a small gap each side as you can see but it covers the length of the battery in my van.

Oh I see!!! THATS the catflap...so its sound proofing for that bit with the number plate on?

Nope, that's the metal battery cover using the sound deadening material meant for the cat flap
