Oil leak, smoke, smell, overheating - 2.1 petrol fuel injected

I took the van on a 90min drive yesterday.
Half way through the journey I noticed the temperature gauge rising, then the temperature light flashing which has never happened before. I stopped to top up the water, which did seem low. Carried on with journey, when 5 mins in i noticed smoke coming from the exterior rear of the van....then the oil light started flickering intermittently! Got out, topped up the oil..noticed the van was still smoking when engine was off...but not coming from the exhaust but various parts of the engine..looked to me like it was oil burning on various parts. I have had an ongoing problem with an oil leak thats never been addressed. Stopped to get some petrol and noticed oil drips from various parts of the engine...normally its only one tiny drip from the same place.
Carried on the journey - noticed the temperature gauge had returned to normal or at least mid way, but the light was still flashing. Oil light came back on after another 20 mins or so and the smoke continued to come out intermittently. The inside of the van smelt of burning oil too.
Got to destination. But now concerned and want to take it to the garage tomorrow if they have time to look at it. My stepdad mentioned that the pistons or rings could have gone and that the oil was coming out over the engine creating the smoke, and thus the temperature would rise unnaturally.
Any ideas? Its happened only once before now, but seemed to just disappear. Obviously Im scared to use the van now.
Thanks all, Emma
