1.9 sdi engine power loss

hey guys, ive got a 1.9 sdi aef engine in my t25.
i recently had a sudden loss of power after being able to easily do 70mph on the motor way.
Ive had the injectors refurbed, lots of fuel cleaner, new fuel filter, checked there was no air in the line ( doesnt seem to be ) however it still feels like its being chocked on the higher rev band.
it smokes alot, especially upon coming off the accelerator. ive currently got the manifold off for good cleaning. and the inside of my head is CAKED in oil and crud. could the intake valves be sticking and causing this problem? would a compression test tell me if this is my Achilles heel.
should i just change the whole engine ? and if yes can i interchange heads etc from the aef between similar aged blocks ?
