Quietening my 1.9diesel

Hi All,

Finally got my engine conversion done and on the road ....
I'm well pleased with my efforts but the engine sounds like a dumper truck !!

Question is :

1. Has anyone fitted a homemade belly pan or other soundproofing mods in the engine bay the same as modern vehicles - looking in the engine bay there is no soundproofing whatsover and nothing under the engine only the lid of the engine cover.

2. I've set the timing up statically ( TDC with cam flat and hole thro fuel pump wheel all matching) - but I've not done the gauge setting on the fuel pump. Will that cause a noisier engine if it's slightly out ?

Any help greatly appreciated
Steve

What arrangements have you got to reduce noise from the air intake?

This is a common source of noise on a converted diesel if the air intake doesn't have a proper air filter in an enclosure, and this has not been connected by an air and noise tight duct to the original snorkel in the left hand rear corner.

Getting this right will make a huge difference to the engine noise.

Glad you got your conversion up and running :ok

Ah, now, you see, I think that's your problem. That lid should be on top of the engine, not underneath it. All that noise is just coming from the huge rectangular opening above the engine and into the van

Sorry, I knew what you meant - I will :run

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies -
After all my hard work I decided to take it to a well established diesel specialist here in Burton who knows VW diesels for a final tune up.

I picked the van up tonight and it is a completely different vehicle !!
Gone is the diesel clatter and I have a reasonably powerful (compared to the 1.7d) smooth engine which is an absolute delight to drive.

Was well worth the money sorting it out - roll on the weekend : )
It's not a dump truck anymore !!

Cheers

Do you know what they did to it?

Apparently the timing was a little bit advanced - even though the timing marks (TDC - fuel pump - camshaft) were bob on, the pump needed fine tuning
They used a dti gauge and measured and tightened every thing again and again until it was just right.

Just a slight margin out makes a big difference
The guy reminded me of "Johan " the German submariner of "das boot" - he loved his diesels :)

Cheers
Steve

What's the name of the company?
Praise where it's due might help others in future.
