I have an odd noise not quite a squeal but maybe a whine when turning the van over to start and it's very sluggish to start, when cold it will start still not 100% by a long way. When hot very difficult to start. Had AA out on the way to the ferry, it's since stopped over here and when it cooled down maybe 1hr later (prob was cooled down before this but had called breakdown that failed to show up - brilliant)
Once running it seems fine ticks over lovely and goes along at 65 no problem.
Plugs are new dizzy cap and rotor sound leads are good, alternator is charging at 13V on tickover, battery seems good maybe 3yrs old. Running Dells 40 seems that one is making a reall sucking sound and the other not... not sure this is connected in anyway to the starting issue, as they both seem to fuel ok
Thoughts - I'm thinking starter, but don't see why it would be worse when hot??? unless engine tight - which I don't really want to consider........
Thoughts??? HELP???

What is the engine type...

If it is nothing exotic then it may be that the 5€ oilite bush (where the starter 'nose' sits in the bellhousing) is worn out.

Where are you .. and are you on the way out.. or back..

Getting 1 is easy.. but I dont think you would want to try and fit this at a camp-site.

If you are staying only in Northern France, then you could park on hills to bump start, and wait till you get home.

If you are coming further South..(where the sun shines!!)..then I will be available until the 20 th Aug.

Hi Thanks loads for your very kind offer, you're right about campsite fitting, bought one and found a garage around the road about 4km away that looked like a bombsite loads of chopped up C15's - inside immaculate, couple of Ferraris one fully restored the other on the way a jag Austin Seven a couple of Alfas mint condition - never judge a book etc.
The guy lovely chap had the starter out and new one in all sorted in about 40 mins.

We're home now, gotta get the van on a rolling road for a sort out
