Morning All ,

Doing front floor pans on my van .

Removed rust spots as best I can only tiniest odd spot left .
I have applied Vactan to these areas and now have combination of
original paint , bare metal and Vactanned bits .

My plan is now to use acid etch primer over all , then top coat with Rustoleum .
Is this the way forward or should I use an Epoxy Primer after Etch Primer ,
then top coat ?

After top coat I am intending to use Flashband (roof flashing ) on floor , then replace carpets .

Any advice on this will be appreciated including best Etch Primer .

Vactan acts as a good primer undercoat on it's own, rustoleum paint is i think self undercoating, have used this with no trouble in similar situations, thinned down though. I would be dubious though sticking flashband down as any moisture or rust affected areas trapped between will rot it through 10 times faster, and you can't see it happening, with just a carpet etc you look under to keep an eye on things, also this keeps air circulating which halts rust forming, cheers.

If i remember correctly, Vactan's website says that you can over coat it with anything. I did it on my previous van with no isues, using a 2k wash-primer [same as etch primer] 4 years on and it was still ok.

I used ab ICI autocolour wash primer, but pretty much any 2k product is fine. Do remember the H&S issues when using 2k products

Thanks for advice , however I'm still confused regarding 2k .

Exhaustive searching spec sheets on t'internet seem to state the substrate has to be spotless ,
in which my mixture of bare /pitted occasional spot steel and original paint doesn't fall into this category .

Like most , I want to be able to carry on working rest of van confident what I have done is waterproof and
2k would appear to fit the bill.
I might do my rust removal , Vactan, conventional primer and finish off with brushed on Rustoleum
to make waterproof . I can always rub this down to blend when I decide to pay for Spray job , or as
seems likely use Rustoleum due to expense .

Yup , H&S really is a must as I found out recently when using Thinners in an enclosed space (under n/s dash)
didn't have a mask and thought I'd take a chance........big mistake !

Epoxy primer is the way to go.
Etch primer is a thing of the past now - epoxy is far better. Personally I wouldn't bother with vactan, I'd treat rust with phosphoric acid, then wash it off and dry it and heat it, then epoxy primer and then top coat of your choice.
I sprayed rustoleum on my van last weekend and I can't stop looking at it. .. Amazing finish for just one coat of paint.
