Hi all,

In the process of trying to fix my badly running engine - I've replaced a previous owner bodge job piece of pipe from the carb to the vac advance with some vacuum pipe from wilco thats 3mm. Is that wide enough?

My engine is lacking power and struggles to reach 50mph. I know I'm not driving a F1 car but it used to run at 60mph fairly comfortably.

Other symptoms include: my exhaust seems to be absolutely roasting whilst the temp gage on the dash is barely reaching 1/3. (had a new radiator recently). Also, I get a loud pop when I turn the ignition off.

Hose should be enough as long as it doesn't collapse but try taking dizzy cap off, remove vac pipe at carb end then look inside dizzy when you suck on the pipe. Does the base plate inside dizzy move? Will it stay there if you stick your tongue over the end of the hose whilst sucking? If plate doesn't move or moves back quickly when pipe is covered with your tongue, the plate is either gummed up solid or vac unit has had it.

Check your timing - crucial.

I recently checked the timing - but was unable to follow the guide on the wiki as I couldn't locate the U and V marks on pulley - but a previous owner had placed some nice red mark (one on pulley and one above) so I set timing to that. Did sound a lot better afterwards.

Regarding the pop / bang sound I get when I turn the ignition off - someone suggested previously that this because my mixture was to rich. Does that sound logicial? I've not touched the mixture screw.
