Hi guys, me and the family are on holiday trip, been to Bestival, now in Bristol, stopped on the way here for Sunday roast van was going great ( guess what's coming!) started again and needed to rev hard to keep the engine from cutting out,, ticks over just pinking for a very short while then cuts out! At speed ok although power output is erratic, soon as revs drop as I slow for roundabouts etc cuts out, any ideas?? Am thinking possible fuel problem maybe fuel filter, was totally fine before stoping though?. Just under Quarter full in tank, all other levels fine, 1900 DG petrol water cooled. Thanks in advance :)

Is it getting enough air. I'm far from being an expert - in fact far from being remotely competant.
my knowledge stops after checking air, fuel and spark

Only time we have ever broke down was caused by fuel evaporite crystals in the float chamber, very similar symptoms to yourself, as ours is not our daily driver it can sit on the driveway for a couple of weeks at a time. I will always clean the float chamber out and give the jets a blast over the summer now. Of course yours may be something else but it does sound fuel or air related.

When first owning the van we still had the old braided vacuum pipes carb to filter/carb to dizzy, had lack of power and lumpy engine when on the move but when standing on the driveway with the lid up everything was fine. After some headscratching time I realised that when the lid was shut it was nipping up one of the very worn vacuum hoses.

Only difference to symptoms between the two was kangaroo and stalling at low revs with lack of fuel and lack of power and stalling at junctions with blocked vacuum.

Well all fixed, turns out it was the dizzy cap and rotor arm, AA man said the spark would find it easier to work on a cold engine full of fuel but when hot it has to work harder and that's why it only happened when the engine was hot. Also think that after 100 miles driving the dizzy depreciated rapidly and finally gave up. Anyway there's a bit of info for future reference.
