Dodgy fuel guage

I've always found my fuel gauge to be a little vague, but last week I filled the tank up and the gauge only went to about 3/4 on the scale? Now it is reading so low that it is a good few mm to the left of the empty position and yet the engine still turns over just fine. I've checked the fuses and the earth crowns were cleaned only a couple of months ago. Can anyone suggest something else that could be causing the strange readings?

Cheers folks!

Is the temp gauge also reading low?
If so it's probably the voltage stabiliser putting out less than 10V.
If not, it sounds like a high resistance in the fuel gauge sender circuit. Could be corrosion on the plug on top of the tank, or (much more likely) a bad connection between the 14 pin plug on the back of the dash and the pcb.
