Child seat in Front or Back

Hi,

We have a 1983 T25 and want a seat for our 10 month old. The rock n roll bed/settee is not that solid and garage said it would be safer to put the child seat in the front.

We're thinking about getting a maxi Cosi Priori XP http://www.halfords.com/kids-zone/car-s ... reflection" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Has anyone any experience/advice/suggestions before we go for it?

Thanks

You could put the seat up front - there's no air bags to worry about.

But if it's a decently built conversion e.g. Holdsworth, Westfalia, Devon, etc, with rear lap belts then you could just replace one, or both, of the lap belts with three point belts (plenty of threads on here if you search) and have options. This is what we did in our Westy as the seat belts are fixed back to the body shell anyway not the bed.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what type the conversion is, maybe Bodgefalia :)

We have 1 lap belt and 1 3 point (attached to body) in the back so we could put it in the back seat but as I said before the rock n roll bed is just a wooden and wasn't sure how safe it would be - especially after the garage said it would be safer in the front.

Hi

We have put our two year old son in the front seat since he was a few weeks old as we felt this was the safest place. He currently has a Kiddy Infinity Pro seat which give good frontal and side protection. We were a little concerned about crash safety in a frontal collision hence considering the Kiddy seat.

My six year old daughter sits in a rear facing seat with a booster. Unfortunately the full child seat (Kiddy Pro) would not fit in this rear facing seat.

My wife sits on the rear bench with a lap belt - although I am looking to fit a three point belt in this position too.

Thanks. She went in the front and loved it - that is until van was scorching inside :)

My baby son was put in front seat in a rear facing baby seat. He still occupies that seat only he's 11 now and puts his feet on the dashboard. He gets very grumpy if someone else sits there! For babies and toddlers front is definately best bet.#

We've got one of these seats, works with both the front 3-point harness, and the rear lap belts:

http://www.mothercare.com/Britax-Eclips ... lt,pd.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We've got the same situation in the back, wooden fold down bed, but with one of the cushions removed (ie, child sear on the wooden base) there's no play in the seat at all when done up nice and tight on the lap belt. I'd add that the mounting points for the lap belts are directly to the chassis, not the seat, have been repaired & reinforced just before I started using the seat in the back due to some rot coming up in the previous MOT - So I'd definitely recommend checking/getting those checked out thoroughly if you're going that route.

And I realise I've posted a Mothercare link, but we got our seat from ToyRUs in Exeter, and the staff were very helpful, made sure the car seat fitted correctly in the van before I paid etc. So I'd say with whichever seat your go for, it's worth checking at a physical shop rather then just buying online to make sure it works with your setup. Worth doing once + getting it right! :D

HTH,
Ben.
