Afternoon,
Looking for some advice and guidance. Can you fit adjustable push rod tubes to a 1.9dg water cooled engine. I don't fancy having to remove the heads in order to do so. If it is possible where is the best place to get them? I see VW Heritage do them at a very respectable £35.50 each

yes you can but need to get the right ones, Brickwerks do them for about 20 quid and you won't get them much cheaper unless you want to do the lot you can get a set a bit cheaper

Excellent thanks for the reassurance. The brickwerks ones do appeal more to the wallet, and the fact I dont have to disturb the heads mean less things to break or with the age of these engines fall apart!!
Thanks again

Never remove heads to change seals or tappets, other than the real risk of snapping a stud, the gasket set alone is best part of 100quid and there will always be other bits needed along the way, add labour and telescopic tubes are a no brainer.

If the head studs wont stand being undone and retorqued, then they are ripe to let go.
Usually when fully laden, under load, on the motorway etc etc.
Sticking your head in the sand won't make your wbx more reliable; more like a liability.

So are you suggesting somebody with push rod oil leak and otherwise working engine takes the heads off because if the studs break they needed £££££££££££££££ixing anyway?
I won't bother with standard push rod tubes in future WBX builds I'm fitting the telescposic ones, much better.

I have scat Big-Mouth (gold anodised finish) tubes with a triple O- ring seal and I use silicone quality seals ( not the ones That come with the tubes)

These do fit a waterboxer but you need to use the smaller seals both ends you will see what I mean if you measure them up. Use some silicone grease on the o rings and also a smear around the seals.
Much cheaper!!!!

Had this problem once and was told by a local specialist VW garage that even if unbolted the head may not come off anyway and could not answer for the consequences of trying to remove it. They never mentioned telescopic tubes and I was overjoyed when I found that telescopic ones could be fitted to save removing the head. As a reasonably experienced amateur mechanic I found it no trouble to do.
I queried the oil drip on the drive and the seller who was middle aged and seemed quite genuine and invited me and the wife in for a cup of tea told me that it was due to him overfilling with oil. But I suspect he been told about the potential head problem by the same local VW garage that I spoke to and decided to get rid of it. He must have had a conscience as it was an absolute bargain price. and using it ever since

nice tip thanks, being bigger diameter is there any issues with oil pressure switch access?
don't suppose you have a pic?

No issues with oil pressure switch , these are neat and tidy and mine haven't leaked in 12 months and one side have been off and on twice!!! They are very handy if you have bought new hydraulic tappets which turn out to be good apart from two duffers!!! The tubes are not really bigger diameter than the originals they are bigger than the ones on an air cooled which is what the big mouth relates to but they do fit a waterboxer wheras the original scat tubes are too small on the inner end!! I dont have a pic as far as I know and the guards are in the way so I would need to take them off!! all you can see is one peeping from behind the guard.
