Calling all self van painters
Gonna possibly have a go at painting my van with Rust-Oleum and have been looking at cheep sand blasters on the bay.
Could I run one of these sandblasters off a portable air compressor for this job do you think?
The sandblaster is rated at 90psi and the little compressor is rated at 250psi .The connectors would be different also but wondering if there are alternatives listed that would do this job..see links

It is more the size of the air tank . It will have to stop and fill itself all the time if the tank is small. If you dont mind that then it should be ok. . I sprayed mine using cellulose from cans it only cost me 100 quid for paint . Pukka job though good luck whatever you decide.

As said above, the little compressor you've shown would only be suitable for pumping up car tyres.

From my experience you need a decent compressor with an air tank and a moisture trap. You need decent kit for blasting.

Oh and good personal protection. Grit dust in the eyes and lungs is a real nasty.

For doing stuff like seams I use 3M clean & strip discs. (Ordinary wire brushes just polish the rust). I buy cheaper versions from our local "Boyes" store in York.

Then a good dose of vactan or similar.

If you do go down the route of a good compressor then you may as well consider a spray gun!

I can move the van to a spray unit with a compressor if needed owned by my sisters boyfriend.I was hoping to avoid this due to costs but will arrange something .I can still roller the van with combi-color though.
Wondering if I can use a bag of sand with this blaster?

Nooooo!!! ...... If you want to reach old age only use proper blasting grit..... Silicosis is a nasty plus sand is too soft, breaks down into a fine dust that settles nicely into the lungs!

I can use a proper dust mask for this job.Just hope it dosent ruin the blaster though
There are lots of vids of guys using ordinary sand ,I have just emailed the supplier for more advice

You'd be better off looking for a second hand bigger compressor. Don't waste your money on that tiny thing. And please don't use sand, try to find somewhere that sells crushed glass... much safer for your lungs and cleaner and doesn't cause rust like sand does...has sharper edges than sand so it works better....sand just explodes into a really fine messy toxic dust... and the glass isn't much more expensive than a bag of sand.

Ordered a 3m strip disc and some vactan .The 3m disc will do the job ok I think...thanks

Having the van painted proper with two pack paint.Only need to buy the paint ...anyone know how many litres I will need for the whole van?
To keep costs down I am prepairing it for paint myself

I am thinking of spraying the bumpers with aerosols but I don't know how this will wear over time.Would I be better of having them done with two pack paint proper or even brush paint with hammerite?.I know from experience aerosols or hammerite flakes and looks awfull after a period of time..any other suggestions for bumber paint?

Guys need to remove rust from the bottom of the sliding door..As you are aware there are indents running along this and I need to get into each to clean the rust out.I read that using Hydrochloric Acid might be the job..failing that its one of those cheep sand blasters for a compressor.

If you have a compressor make your own blaster using baking soda.

Plenty of you tube videos on it and it just washes away afterwards without leaving any problems.

Hydrocloric acid is used can be used in a diluted form but I really would not recommend it. You need to really careful with as it can be nasty stuff.

The most common used chemical for rust removal is Phosphric acid. This also needs to be treated with respect but is a little more user friendly. What ever you use the area needs to be degreased first.

You would be better off using Vactan or the Bilt Hammer product and then painting. Once completed a good coat of wax will help. I've used Bult Hammers UB wax and its really good stuff. Don't buy Bilt hammer from flee bay, try the link below as its nearly £7 a bottle cheaper and they also sell the UB wax.
