Window surrounds - what gauge steel?

Hi all,
Looking at chopping out and replacing the window surrounds that have rusted on our 1980 2.0l air-cooled panel van conversion.
Got one window out but as the panel has rusted both sides, putting a vernier gauge on it doesn't give a true or consistent reading due to the undulations in the rust. I think it is somewhere between 0.8-1.0mm.
Before I order some steel sheet, can anyone advise exactly what the gauge is please? Also, anyone know a good steel supplier?
Cheers,
Chris
