Hi there
I have noticed a very strong smell of petrol/oil fumes on the inside of my van while driving.
It seems to be worse with the drivers window open however even with it closed there is still the fumes.
What should I be checking???

Top of fuel tank, filler pipe, return hoses, all clips.

Thanks but after checking it seems to be more exhaust fumes rather than neat petrol
Would that make any difference to what the issue may be?

Is the engine air cooled or water cooled??

As above, petrol smell is usually from the rust holes in the top of the fuel tank, perished breather pipes or perished filler neck. Breather tanks and filler are right by front doors so any fumes are very noticeable. Exhaust fumes most likely to get in through poor seals or fitting of engine cover or rear door.
