Hi,

Been getting re acquainted with the dirty bits (whoar) on my van today. Engaging first is difficult. Can get it in either by a firm sweep from second gear position or by pushing down (as per reverse) a little (but then it selects a little off to the left which you can feel when coming back out of first)

Had a look at the excellent wiki, so went back under and yes the linkage shaft bearings are sloppy especially the rear one. The centre one has slop up and down. I'll get them ordered from Brickwerks hopefully tomorrow. Are they likely suspects??

Theres a little play up and down on the UJ but not a lot.

The gearbox was lovingly rebuilt by Aidan a while back and only done about a thousand miles.

hi get under the van and clean and grease it all up first... when was gear box oil done mine was the same... if you clean it and grease it first it dont cost you any thing plus it will save you a job later ok

Thank you. Its all sloppy so gonna bite the bullet and order the bits that are available from Brickwerks. There are no rubber bellows over the rear bush so that hasn't helped.

is it a 5 speed box? reads like you have a dog-leg where you have to move the gear stick across to the left, press down and move stick down to select first.

syncro is same gearstick as 4 speed, but we have to go under gate for G gear as well as reverse, we only have 4 normal gears, G is like a 5 speed 1st gear but with a 3 to1 reduction gear to it as has reverse

there are no boots fitted on this van's rear linkage because it is an earlysyncro van built before the boots were fitted ( later suffix E bush rather than having two suffix D bushes), you can tell as there is no clamped clip fitted at the front of the polished area of the shaft, which acts as a stop against the boot when fitted ; also on a syncro there is a whole bunch of drainpipe and associated parts which enclose the gear linkage all the way to the front bush which isn't fitted on this early syncro, so linkage is less protected and needs more maintenance
