Starter motor advice needed

Please bear with me if I don't use the correct terminology.

1983 AAZ conversion. 5 speed dogleg.

I went to start my van yesterday and all I got was a click from the solenoid. Got the starter off today and if I connect a jump cable to the pin by the exciter wire on the solenoid the drive gear springs forward but the starter doesn't spin. If I connect a jump cable to the starter itself bypassing the solenoid it spins within the housing but the drive gear doesn't come forward.

I've got a repro on order from heritage but would rather get this bosch working.

Any advice gratefully received.

Many Thanks

They are not so hard to pull apart, it could just be full of muck.

Isn't that normal behaviour, if on the bench?

Youd need to jump power to the solenoid AND starter to get it to pop out and spin the starter.... I'd think?
