Gearbox input shaft play

Have searched the wiki and Google but can't find an answer.....

The input shaft on my gearbox (5 speed AAP) has quite a bit of lateral play: maybe 1mm or more. I am changing the spigot bearing but wondered if I should also be splitting the case and replacing the rear mainshaft needle bearing (002311125A)?

The part is available from vw heritage for a tenner. Anyone done this before? A specialist job or DIY

Cheers
Jim

If I understand correctly, it is quite normal for the clutch end of the input shaft to have play of up to 6mm each way.

As I know the small (like the 1mm you mentioned) radial play is normal at the spigot bearing end, that is why the spigot bearing is a must have. If you have a longitudial play then it is time to book in at Aidan ;) :ok

a little float is good; you can't do the input bearing without stripping the box down pretty much completely, 5 spanners job;
new spigot bearing, clutch, don't lube the guide tube, clean it, replace if rough, metal tube - plastic lined bearing guide, self lubed, additional lube attracts clutch dust and makes grinding paste wears tube and bearing sleeve;
do lube the contact points on back of release bearing/tips of forks with copperslip, change the oil and go camping

bite point of clutch will vary depending on which clutch how worn, wear on clutch foks, wear in slave cylinder pushrod and set up and or wear at pedal end
Take linkage out of the equation, can you select gear at box, 1st is push selector ball in to stop and forward, reverse is backwards if 5 speed, in 7mm against spring pressure and forward if a 4 speed

I've got to fit a new AHU engine into my T3 and trying to locate a needle bearing that goes between the input shaft and the crank at the clutch end - it's a nightmare!

I tried Brickwerks "out of stock", GSF, "What's that?" they said, VW Parts "no"....."too old", VW Heritage... "9 week wait",

ebay lots to choose from but which size do I need for this bearing and which manufacturer?

Anyone able to help please? I don't want Aiden's gearbox wrecked so i'd like the right part for the job.

AHHHHHHHH

hi Aidan, yes VW fobbed me off! No one seems to know their job anymore in these parts companies, thank goodness for specialists.
