I have just fitted, with the help of my local garage, a flexi hose and solid pipe to my slave cylinder.

Previously there was solid pipe all the way to the slave cylinder, but I was concerned that it might break, as there was very little in the way of a loop or bend in it to take up the flex. And indeed as I took it off the slave cylinder it cracked, hence having to take it to the garage for a new flange to be put on it.

Took the van for a good run today, and found that the clutch biting point is very near the floor. It is pretty much impossible to get it into gear when the van is stationary, without trying 2 or 3 times. However when I looked under the van there is no seeping from the connections that I can see, and when it is held on the clutch, I am not aware of the clutch slowly being released as would be the case if there was a leak. What might be causing the problem, and how do I solve it?

Otherwise it was all going great, and this was it's first decent run for a year, after last years holiday and the subsequent repairs.

It was meant to have been bled by the garage. I know they certainly intended to as I found the bleed kit in the engine bay when I got home! But it may have been rushed and incomplete. Thanks. I'll try that.

Bled it, seemed better, but the extra pressure made the joint the garage did start leaking, so I took it back to them to sort out. Left it with the owner this time, who is old enough that he has years of experience working on T25s when they were new.

He once mentioned that high mileage jx engines tend to use oil as the cylinders get ovalised due to the engine being canted over. That he had sent 5 or 6 off to get bored back in the day as nothing else would sort it.

Don't believe that theory on canted engines... engineers not mechanics say that's rubbish. All other forces on piston up to and over 1000 times the layover forces.

Subarus and all flat engines do it too? No don't think so.

It's usually something other than piston bore wear that do for these engines. .. bottom ends can go (No. 2 main cap)... rings possibly but mostly the head cracks on IDI diesels.
Overheated coked oil also losing its integrity.
Cam follower problems occasionally. Broken timing belt.. Overheated engine due broken water pump belt. General loss of oil pressure etc etc

But if its using oil its either rings (worn stuck) piston edge damage, valve stem seals or very often the low turbo is worn... possibly the biggest JX 52° layover issue

Clutch fixed. Owner did it. Not sure what he said to the boy who did the fix in the first place, but he did mention he was a mechanic down this week.

Harry - thanks for your wisdom about oil loss and high mileage jx. I'll store that info away. Luckily I'm only on 120,000miles for the van, and 7000 on an allegedly reconditioned motor...
