Hi,

Please could someone enlighten me as to what this part is and its function.
Haynes doesn't do diesel models so not covered in the manual.

I tried to upload a small image of the item <100K and received an error message - Sorry the board attachment quota has been reached.
The item is cylindrical and is connected into the oil cooling system and has an electrical connection to it.
It is located on the far side of the engine bay.
It is all rusted and manky looking!
Anyone know where I can get a replacement?

I am planning on fitting an oil cooler so may this part would no longer be needed?

Further info,

It is about 130mm long and 30mm wide.
It has two hoses connected to it, one joins into one of the large diameter cooling hoses that goes to the radiator at the front of the van, the other goes to the aluminium manifold that the oil filter is connected to.

I wonder if the unit shuts of the oil water cooling once it has reached a set temperature?

It's the aux water pump, and yours is pretty rusty! If that was on mine I'd want to be replacing it, I've had one break apart before while on the motorway..
Brickwerks sell them, there is two types. You can tell what one you have by how many ribs the electrical plug has. I'll get a link for you..

That is the aux water pump. It pumps the water through the oil cooler when the water temp reach 104C.

Its the auxiliary water pump its supposed to come on if the water gets very hot 105/107deg c.
I had mine break apart ending with a very cooked engine!!

As others have said - Aux Water Pump - it circulates the coolant through the cylinder head after the engine has been switched off so that things cool evenly.

A couple of things to watch:

- there are two types of plug connector - make sure you order a pump with the right type of plug for your cabling (don't ask me how I know this )

- the pump is switched on when a dedicated sensor on the engine records a temp above a certain level - if the sensor is dead the pump can keep running, even after the ignition is switched off, until your battery is dead. After you've fitted it for the first time and run the engine come back and check after 15 minutes - if the pump is still running your sensor needs replacing - unplug the pump to stop it running and replug once the sensor has been replaced (again don't ask me how I know this )

Have just placed an order with Brickwerkes for a new one, with temperatures in the 30s where we will be in France I don't fancy a cooked engine!

Had a similar experience with our Citroen Picasso, the radiator fan stayed on after the ignition was switched off and flattened the battery.
It was pitch dark when we got back to the car and found it dead!

Kev,

The Haynes manual for the T25/T3 only covers the petrol models.
I don't know why Haynes never did a manual for the diesel Transporter.
I would need to get a manual for a MKIII Golf or Passat etc.as you suggest.

I too have a jx with the aux pump, but mine is still in the box of bits bought and waiting to be fitted, as all I have is the pipes joined together. However I can't for the life of me figure out the wiring. The pump I have bought has a connector with a grey and a brown wire, and twi ribs, if that's any help.
