Kayak / Surfboard on the side of a hi top question

Hi all
My mate has a hi-top and wants to attach a kayak canoe on to the side of his van using brackets like the type to hold a surfboard. The issue is he is physically unable to lift the kayak over his head and onto the brackets.
He is currently looking at how to use a winch on the opposite side to pull it up and drop it into the brackets. No idea yet how to lift it back off though.
Just asking what people out there use or have seen to lift it onto and then off the brackets
Remember the kayak it light, but he just is not able to physically lift and hold it in place. And it would have to be a one mane job
Cheers

You can get roof racks where the bit that holds the kayak / surfboard slides down to make access easy.

If he's got a Westy hightop then what he needs to find is a Sherpas Translift as the top holes for fixing these racks are already incorporated in the roof. There's a scan of the brochure page where you can see the system here:

They come up for sale occassionally in the UK, but more often on eBay.de. You can find some info / manuals on the westfaliat3.info site here.

If he doesn't have a Westy, then Reimo sell their own alternative version, see here:
