Speedo problem

Hi all
I am seeking advice...on a drive yesterday returning from a few days in Devon the milometer (odometer?) and the trip-meter on my van packed up. The speedometer itself works fine.
Does anyone have any idea of what the problem might be and how to cure it?
A look at the back of the speedo and all I can see is a connection for the cable itself and a connection for the dial light.
Any advice would be much appreciated - even if it's just directing me to a reliable VW garage/mechanic somewhere near south London would be useful.

Note small bracket added in bottom pic. Best solution - superglue won't hold forever.

You're very welcome Ernest. Cog slides out and loses contact basically. You can glue them (I did in the past) but its generally a short-lived fix and something screwed on that prevents this is generally better. Some have had success crushing the end of the shaft so it flattens slightly but I think some kind of 'stop' is more reliable.

I will try to make a fix. As the van has a log of every journey taken (however short) during its 69,000 miles it would be s shame if it I can't continue this in line with odometer record.
I know this sounds a bit anal but the log was started by the first owner of 17 years and so when I bought the van 8 years ago I keep the log going.

Re the slipping white cog. Can't remember where I read it, but glue is not ideal, squash the shaft gently between the serrated bit of the jaws of a set of pliers. Start gently, trying harder pressure until you get to the point where the cog is a firm push fit back onto the shaft. You can barely see the marks left by the pliers, but it works. Not my idea, I read it on BW or maybe the Sirocco forum (same basic design of speedo).
